Detents act as small little fingers that hold the ball in the proper place in the breach. And, when the bolt moves forward, the detents either bend out of the way or get pushed away from the bolt, so the bolt doesn't chop them in half.

Ball detents should be replaced every 1–3 years, depending on weather and usage.

A primary symptom of a failed detent is barrel rollout, which means the ball is rolling out of the barrel because it's not staying in the breech.
